Empower Your Life Through Karate
Ipswich Karate is one of Australia's leading karate schools, with a world-class chief instructor and a rich history in the sport. Our school is proud to be a part of the world-renowned Japan Karate Association, making us a respected and valued member of the global karate community.
Our chief instructor, Sensei Jim Dodrill, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the dojo. Raised in the working-class suburbs of Dublin, Ireland, Sensei Jim grew up with a passion for martial arts. He began his karate training in 1980 while still in high school and has since trained with some of the most respected Shotokan instructors from around the world. With a successful competitive career, including several state and national championships, Sensei Jim has been sharing his expertise and passion for karate with his students for many years.
Our Style: Shotokan Karate
Shotokan is a style of karate developed from earlier martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi and his son Yoshitaka in the early 20th century. Funakoshi, born in Okinawa, is widely credited with popularizing karate through a series of public demonstrations and by promoting the development of university karate clubs. Shotokan is named after Funakoshi's pen name, Shoto, which means "pine waves" or "wind in the pines". A karate master and an avid poet and philosopher, Funakoshi was said to compose his poetry while on long walks through the forest, where he would meditate and write. The name Shotokan, therefore, translates to "House of Shoto", paying tribute to Funakoshi's pen name.
