Our journey began when Doris and Berthold Herrman, the entrepreneurial couple who founded HPM, started experimenting with a cantankerous, old plastic moulding machine. They tried various items, including salad servers, shoe horns, and fly spray tubes, before finding success with knobs for radio sets. This marked the beginning of our journey in the electrical industry.

Over the years, HPM has been committed to innovation, safety, and reliability. We have been a pioneer in the development of modern electrical systems for home and work, and have played a significant role in making electricity accessible to millions of homes across Australia and New Zealand.

In 2007, HPM joined the Legrand Group, a global leader in electrical installations and information networks. This collaboration gave us access to a wealth of research data and intellectual property from around the world, allowing us to expand our product range and offer a greater breadth of electrical solutions to our customers.

Our History

HPM has a rich history that dates back to the 1930s. Our journey began when Doris and Berthold Herrman founded the company, and we have been committed to innovation, safety, and reliability ever since.

In the 1940s, we won a contract to make plugs and inlets for the iconic Sunbeam mixmaster. This marked the first time we made electrical plugs as we know them today. In the 1950s, we started making plugs and sockets under the HPM brand for the first time, and our first catalogue contained just six items.

Over the years, we have been shaped by our founders, Doris and Berthold, and later by Peter Simon, a German immigrant and electrical engineer who became Managing Director of HPM. We have been recognized with multiple Australian Design Awards for our innovative products, including the fanlight, an exhaust fan and ceiling light combined in one unit.

Today, we are part of the Legrand Group, a global leader in electrical installations and information networks.
