Who we are

The Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) is a unique and vibrant community of lawyers, academics, and other professionals united by a shared commitment to protecting and promoting justice, freedom, and the rights of individuals. Established in 1999, we are a not-for-profit association driven by the belief that everyone deserves access to a just and equitable society.

The importance of common law

At the heart of our work lies the importance of common law. This vast and evolving body of legal principles and precedents forms the foundation of our legal system, ensuring fairness, predictability, and access to justice. We firmly believe in upholding and promoting the principles of common law to ensure that it continues to serve as a vital tool in resolving disputes and upholding individual rights.

Our work

The ALA tackles a diverse range of important issues, including:

• Human rights: Promoting and protecting fundamental rights such as access to justice, freedom of expression, and the right to a fair trial.
• Justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: Addressing the systemic injustices faced by Indigenous Australians and advocating for their equal access to justice and opportunity.
• Pre-election advocacy: Holding governments accountable by providing informed analysis and submitting submissions on important policy issues.
• Advocacy and public education: Raising public awareness of legal and social issues through opinion pieces, media appearances, and educational programs.
