We are Australia's first free community legal service, established over 50 years ago to fight for justice and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Born from a protest movement in Redfern, we've grown to 21 offices across NSW and the ACT while maintaining our core mission of providing culturally appropriate legal advice, representation, and community services. As a peak body and Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, we combine direct service provision with systemic advocacy, law reform work, and policy development.Our team of legal professionals and community field officers deliver services in criminal law, family law, child protection, housing, and family violence matters. Recognised nationally for our advocacy, we partner with governments and communities to address systemic inequalities while maintaining our independence and community focus. We provide legal representation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people facing criminal charges in NSW and ACT courts. Our lawyers handle matters from initial police contact through to court representation, including bail applications and appeals. We work with community field officers to ensure culturally appropriate support throughout the legal process.
Bail applications
Our bail assistance includes application preparation, condition negotiation, and compliance support for Indigenous clients. We operate specialised programs like Front-Up and Ngurrambai Bail Support in the ACT to reduce reoffending and custody rates through tailored care plans and court advocacy.
Child protection
We represent Aboriginal families in child protection matters across NSW and ACT courts. Our services include early intervention support, court representation, and family reunification assistance through programs like ACFAS in Dubbo and Moree, focusing on keeping families together with cultural connections.
