Empowering Minds and Bodies through the Art of Shotokan Karate

Welcome to Shotokan Karate International Australia (SKIA), a not-for-profit martial arts association formed in 1977. We follow the style and philosophy of the legendary martial artist, Master Hirokazu Kanazawa (10th Dan), founder of the SKIF - one of the largest Karate organisations in the world.

As a leading Karate organisation in Australia, we are dedicated to promoting the art of Shotokan Karate, a style characterised by its effective use of attacks and blocks at far maai (the distance maintained between opponents). Our training process comprises four areas: kihon (basics), kumite (sparring), kata (pre-arranged series of movements and techniques) and competition. We cater to Karate enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, and offer a range of programs and resources to support their Karate journey.

Our Services

At SKIA, we offer a range of services to support our members and the broader Karate community. Our national executive team manages the overall direction and strategy of the organisation, while our technical and development team focuses on refining our teaching methods and techniques. We also have a team of referees and officials who oversee our competitions and events, ensuring that they are conducted fairly and safely.

Our resources section is a treasure trove of information for Karate enthusiasts, featuring competition results, media articles, and technical resources. We also provide specific resources for new starters, members, instructors, and technical officials. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, we have something for everyone.

Our Philosophy

At SKIA, we believe that true Karate-do places weight upon spiritual rather than physical matters. We strive to create an environment where our members can develop their minds and bodies in a spirit of humility, and be devoted utterly to the cause of justice. Our motto is to promote Karate as a way of life, rather than just a physical activity.

Our History

Shotokan Karate has a rich history, dating back to the early 20th century. Our style derives its name from Funakoshi's pen name Shoto, and is characterised by its effective use of attacks and blocks at far maai (the distance maintained between opponents). Over the years, we have evolved to incorporate various training methods and philosophies, while remaining true to the core principles of Karate-do.
